Tree-mendous Christmas tree recycling service is best yet, raising over £18,000 for hospice

It might just be over one month since Christmas Day and, while it’s a distant memory for many, one local charity is still benefitting from the holiday spirit.

Prospect Hospice is celebrating after their Christmas tree recycling service raised over £18,000 to care for local people.

The tree-cycle initiative in partnership with Helping Hands, took place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 January, across Swindon with more than 1,100 real trees collected.

Jo Hyde, clinical lead of the hospice’s inpatient unit said:” I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making our tree-cycle initiative the best year yet, including all our wonderful volunteers who gave up their time for free to help us over the weekend.

We collected over 500 more trees this year than we did last year so I want to thank everyone who arranged their collection through us and donated to the hospice. Their donations make a real difference to the people we care for and £18,000 will mean a great deal to the hospice.

“I know many people will think that their £15 might not go very far however, collectively, through having their trees collected and donating, this £18,000 will mean we’re able to look after at least two patients on our inpatient unit and provide everything they need during their entire stay with us. An incredibly achievement made possible through this initiative.

”I’d also like to thank to our partners, Helping Hands for helping to coordinate the weekend and Enterprise and SW Group Logistics who provided vehicles free of charge, as well as teams from Amazon who also supported the collection. It really is amazing what we can all achieve when we come together, so thank you to everyone who was involved.’

The trees have now been taken for recycling where they are being chipped and reused locally in the grounds of sports fields or to make paths in local parks.
