Treetops Hospice Care to launch non-verbal bereavement therapy for young adults

Treetops Hospice Care in Derbyshire is launching a new non-talking therapy programme to support young people who find it difficult to express their grief in words.

Beginning in September, the Mollitiam Projx (which is Latin for resilience) is for young people aged 11 to 17 who have been significantly affected by the traumatic bereavement of a parent, carer or sibling.

Young people will attend six weekly group-based sessions with activities including animal therapy, drumming therapy, yoga therapy and complementary therapy to help them understand grief and manage their feelings better.

Non-talking therapies offer a way of processing the most difficult and unspeakable feelings. Jules Kirk, Treetops senior families counsellor, explains more:

“We are very proud to be launching our new project for bereaved young people. It gives us the opportunity to reach those affected by traumatic bereavement, who are not quite ready to talk about their experience and offer them another way of processing their grief.

“Sometimes when you have been through a traumatic experience, it can be hard to articulate or process your feelings. With guidance, these non-talking therapies offer a way of accessing, expressing and processing the most difficult and unspeakable feelings.

“As the project is all group work, it will also give them the opportunity to be with other young people who have had a similar life event so they feel less alone or isolated.”

The Mollitiam Projx is available to young people who are registered with a GP practice in Derby city or the southern Derbyshire area, or who have used Treetops services. Parents, carers and professionals can refer young people onto the programme and self-referrals can also be made by young people aged 13 or above.

Funding for the new programme has come from the Hospice UK Masonic Charitable Foundation Hospice Bereavement Care Programme.
