Hospices operate in a distinctive ecosystem, providing care in the sacred space between life and death. At the same time, hospices in the UK are facing sustained financial pressures, increasing demand, workforce fatigue and identity-shaping legislation such as assisted dying.
How are hospice leaders experiencing and navigating this reality?
I am Saiyada Fazal, Organisational Development Lead at Dorothy House Hospice Care and currently undertaking postgraduate research focused specifically on hospice leadership in complex systems. This survey forms part of that work. It aims to surface how hospice leaders are adapting their practice, sustaining organisational stability and holding compassion under prolonged strain.
At a time when the sector faces uncertainty, collective insight matters. The findings will inform a series of 1:1 semi-structured interviews and will be shared back with the sector to strengthen hospice-specific leadership practice. The survey is open to leaders across children’s, adult and combined hospices throughout the UK, including clinical, enabling and retail functions.
If you are a leader in a UK hospice, your lived experience matters. Please take eight minutes to contribute to this sector-wide survey here.
