The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization thanks Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar for signing a renewal of his determination that COVID-19 constitutes a public health emergency (PHE). Extending the COVID-19 PHE will support hospice and palliative care providers for an additional 90 days, effective July 25, 2020 through October 23, 2020, as they serve patients while grappling with the coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter sent to Secretary Azar on June 26, 2020 NHPCO outlined the needed flexibilities granted under the Secretary’s declaration of the public health emergency and President Trump’s national emergency declaration.

“NHPCO is grateful to Secretary Azar for his leadership during the coronavirus pandemic and for taking decisive action by renewing the COVID-19 public health emergency declaration. The continued support of the Administration has enabled hospices to provide high quality hospice and palliative care to patients and families in their homes and communities, despite unprecedented challenges,” said NHPCO President and CEO Edo Banach.
