The Adirondack Fiddler: A hospice story

Categories: Uncategorized.

Every day, professionals from the hospice and palliative care community interact personally with thousands of patients and their families. It is hard to communicate the impact this person-centered, team approach can have with words alone.

The Adirondack Fiddler: A Hospice Story is a grassroots production created entirely by the staff at High Peaks Hospice. It takes us inside the lives of hospice patient Dale Lashway and his wife and caregiver, Beverly Lashway.

Pride of the Adirondacks

Dale was a five-time winner of the New York State Fiddle Contest and a longtime member of the Cold Brook Ramblers. Dale defined himself by his music, which was in turn cherished by many.

Dale suffered from chronic airway obstruction and pulmonary hypertension and was admitted into hospice care.  Despite battling an intimidating condition, Dale continued living with help from hospice on his own terms, playing the music he loved. He passed away on August 31, 2014, but his music will live on.

Welcome to Willsboro

The film blends the couple’s personal narrative with useful information on hospice care and the local flavor of Willsboro, NY to create an accessible and engaging piece on hospice and palliative care in local communities.

Viewers will find it easy to connect to the warm personalities of Beverly and her late husband.  “The willingness and cooperation of Dale and Beverly Lashway helped make this film possible,” noted High Peaks Hospice’s Development Coordinator, Ingrid Roemischer, who singlehandedly filmed their story.

Although the video highlights Dale and Beverly’s unique story, it is not intended to be viewed as solely a biography piece. Rather, it serves a dual purpose of both educating the public on how hospice & palliative care can benefit terminally ill patients and families, while telling the unique story of a lifelong fiddler.
