World Cancer Day (4th February 2014) is a chance for the palliative care community to engage with the wider medical world and to join their collective efforts in improving general knowledge around cancer and dismissing misconceptions about the disease – including myths around palliative care and cancer.
Globally there are over 400 events happening to mark World Cancer Day. Specifically in Africa there is also plenty happening. Here is just a selection.
Uganda:
UWOCASO will use media as a strategy to continue creating awareness about breast and cervical in Uganda. They are going to have a radio talkshow and also publishing articles in local newspapers. Since UWOCASO is a group of breast and cervical cancer survivors, they are also going to visit patients in their homes. More details here…
DRC:
The University of Goma is publishing results from research undertaken by Medecins unis en mission in Goma looking at knowledge, attitudes and practice of GPs towards Cancer. Read more here…
Kenya:
Events include:
- Screening for key reproductive health cancers, namely cervical and breast cancer at Afya House, 31 January 2014.
- Cancer awareness messages on various media from 28 February – 4 January 2014
- Kenyan Corporate Declaration Breakfast – 4th February 2014 (World Cancer Day) by (Kenya Medical Association)
- Training of Health Workers on Cancer detection on 7 February 2014 by (AstraZeneca).
- Two Day Scientific Conference on 20 & 21 February 2014 (Kenya Medical Association)
- Corporate Statement day on 22 February 2014 (Kenya Medical Association)
- Cancer Screening Week on 20 & 21 February 2014 (Kenya Medical Association)
- Awareness on Media (Briefings, local radio talk and TV shows) and Social Media (Facebook: World Cancer Day Kenya and Twitter @africf)
Ghana:
Breast Care International (BCI) in collaboration with Peace and Love Hospitals (PLH) celebrated this year’s World Cancer Day on February 2, 2014 at the Faith Assemblies of God Church, Tafo, Kumasi. The event aimed to raise awareness of cancer, encouraging its prevention, and promoting early detection and treatment. Read more here…

A World Cancer Day commemoration took place at Ledumang open grounds by choppies on the 1st of February. Read more here…
Nigeria:
The following activities will mark the day:
- Distribute cervical cancer leaflets alongside the UICC fact sheets as one of the Institute’s main research focus is cervical cancer
- Carry out media campaign by creating awareness on radio using fun radio jingles centered around the theme for the World Cancer Day 2014
- Use branded T shirts with the UICC approved logos by volunteers distributing flyers and leaflets, distribution of Pins with UICC approved logos and messages
- Use social media to share UICC approved messages on IHVN Facebook site, twitter account, IHVN website. We will also be specifically using
- Organize a 100 man walkathon with participants wearing branded T shirts and distributing flyers and pins
