Hospice Africa Uganda is celebrating 20 years of palliative care with a week of celebrations between the 13th and 18th May.

The celebration events will include a public presentation on the organisation’s accomplishments, a palliative care research day and public lecture, and business luncheon. The week’s celebrations will cumulates in a ‘mini-marathon’ to be held at the Independence Grounds in Kololo, Kampala on Saturday 18th May.

At the ‘mini-marathon’ there will also be health screening services available for members of the public.

As well as celebrating the last 20 years, the week will also aim to raise awareness around the ongoing need for effective, culturally appropriate and affordable palliative care in Uganda.

Hospice Africa Uganda started in 1993 offering services to cancer patients, but soon extended to people living with HIV/AIDS in 1994. Today the hospice is an accredited leader and one of the few institutions in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa to provide and build capacity for pain and symptom management and end of life care.

Commenting on the celebrations, Hospice Africa Uganda’s Executive Director, Zena Bernacca, said, “These celebrations are an opportunity not just to celebrate what has been achieved, but also to look to the future.  This week of events is an opportunity to reinforce the message that Hospice Africa Uganda is the premier model for palliative care delivery and education in Uganda and across Africa.”

She continued, “I would like to also extend my sincere and heart-felt appreciation to our friends, donors, partners, volunteers, and team members who are working tirelessly to support the work we are doing. The support we offer patients is only possible because of their hard work. ”
