For over a decade, Mildmay Uganda has been known for provision of specialist HIV care however this Private Teaching Hospital is a social enterprise initiative by the Mildmay Board to support organisational growth for sustainable service delivery to poor households.
While opening the Private Medical wing on 18th February 2015 at Mildmay Uganda, the Wakiso Woman Member of Parliament Rosemary Sseninde, thanked Mildmay Uganda for being among the players filling some of the gaps in the health sector.
“Ssabagabo County in Wakiso district where Mildmay lies is experiencing an increasing population with about 2.3 M people and we lobbying that it becomes a Municipality. Unfortunately the health facilities are inadequate to meet the health needs of all these people yet that is an essential requirement. We appreciate Mildmay Uganda for coming up to provide general services and we shall support Mildmay Uganda in this venture”.
The Deputy Executive Director and Director Finance and Operations, George Wamushiyi said, “currently MUg provides a free comprehensive HIV care package to all its clients through donor funding mainly Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However in order to manage the risk of potential donor pull outs, it’s necessary for us to focus on strategies that will ensure continuity of our activities”.
This hospital will create a patient care environment that ensures timely care; kindness, empathy and respect for patients; privacy and flexible patient friendly terms of payment and coordinated patient care. The hospital will be a Center of Excellence in modeling and training quality health care whose graduates will replicate similar medical care programmes
Meanwhile over 600 people turned up at Mildmay Uganda for free medical consultation with specialist doctors during the Community Awareness Day and opening of the Private Medical wing.
The Community Awareness day was the first of its kind and was aimed at creating awareness about Mildmay’s services for people in the surrounding communities of Lweza, Kajjansi, Makindye, Naziba, Lubowa and Seguku
Those who turned up first had a tour of the Mildmay Hospital and later received free services which included free medical consultation, treatment of minor health problems, HIV Counseling and Testing, cervical cancer screening, safe male circumcision, health Education among other services.
MUg is an institution of higher learning accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education and offers a number of short and long term courses including a bachelor of science and a diploma in paediatric palliative care. Over 30,000 health professionals have been trained in palliative care to date.
84,772 PLHIV are receiving care at Lweza main site and in the 16 supported districts. 69,117 are on Anti-retroviral therapy.
