The Global Access to Pain Relief Initiative (GAPRI) has allocated a full-time morphine distribution analyst to Kampala, in partnership with the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU).
The analyst, Jennifer Tymon, will be working with PCAU to help track distribution while working with the National Medical Stores to provide support for distribution issues that arise. Tymon will also support Hospice Africa Uganda to help them become a licensed drug supplier and to upgrade their facilities to meet the standards of the National Drug Authority.
“Having someone wake up every day to make sure someone is thinking about morphine availability is key,” said GAPRI Director Dr Meg O’Brien of Tymon’s role.
Tymon, who previously worked for the African Palliative Care Association in Namibia, will be based in Kampala for ten months while GAPRI seeks funding for a full-time fellow.
“The partners in Uganda have made tremendous strides in improving morphing availability. We’re happy to be able to add technical resources that will allow that work to continue to expand,” Dr O’Brien said.
