Hospice Africa Uganda’s founder, Dr Anne Merriman, made a short speech in the middle of the award ceremony paying tribute to Claire Muhumuza who she described as “dedicated and caring”.
Dr Merriman’s comments were echoed by both students and the academic staff who were gathered for the award ceremony.
Claire’s certificate was collected by Roberta Spencer from Center for Hospice Care of South Bend, Indiana who sponsored Claire through her academic studies.
Speaking after the ceremony Spencer commented, “Claire was a committed mother and a committed wife. She showed extreme dedication to her patients and ultimately gave her life for her love and commitment to her patients”.
Spencer went onto describe how after people started dying at Claire’s clinic the other nurses left from fear but that Claire had opted to stay and care for her patients. Weeks later she was taken to hospital and quickly passed away.
After Claire’s death it was discovered that she had died from an ebola outbreak which tragically also took the lives of her young daughter and her sister.
Claire was one of the first student’s to be sponsored by the Centre for Hospices South Bend Indiana. Her tragic death and her commitment to her patients so touched the board that they have decided to financially help with the family home and to support the surviving children through their education.
