In August ehospice covered the moving story of Margret and her 10 year old daughter who was forced into performing the role of her mother’s primary care giver.
Months after Margret’s death, Hospice Tororo has provided this short up-date on the fate of her 10 year old daughter:
“After the death of her mother she moved to the house of an aunt and asked if she could go back to school again. The aunt didn’t have money for school fees and had the opinion that if she wanted to live there and eat their food, she should work for it. She then spent long days on the field to grow crops and would then clean the house after that.
She objected and the aunt then said that she was no longer welcome and would find a suitable husband for the girl. The husband would then be responsible for the girl. Our girl was bold enough to realize that if she wanted to have a future, she should not get married so young and so she ran away to another aunt.
The second aunt wanted to take care of her but was afraid her husband might like this young girl for other purposes and so it was decided she shouldn’t stay there either.
The girl went on to find a home with her grandfather, a very old man who can’t really care for her, but at least she would be safe for the time being. Fortunately some people who read the original article were so touched that they decided they wanted to help. They visited Tororo and interviewed the girl. Now arrangements are made for her to go back to school which will be funded by these well-wishers.
Hospice Tororo wants to thank Center for Hospices – USA and the Palliative Care Association of Uganda for making it possible for this girl to have a future by arranging support for her. Soon she will go back to school again!”
