The BC Centre for Palliative Care was established in mid-2013
with funding received from the Ministry of Health as part of the
Provincial End of Life Care Action Plan for British Columbia. The
Institute for Health System Transformation & Sustainability (IHSTS) was
asked to lead the creation of the BC Centre for Palliative Care, and Dr.
Barwich’s appointment marks an important milestone in its
development.
Under Dr. Barwich’s leadership, the newly established BC
Centre for Palliative Care will serve as a provincial hub to improve care for
people living with serious and advanced illness and their families. The Centre
will provide leadership to support excellence in evidence-informed practice,
education, innovation, collaboration and policy development.
Dr. Barwich will step down from her role as Program Medical
Director for Fraser Health’s End of Life Care Program, where she has been
recognized for her strong leadership in helping to build the health authoritie’s
End of Life Care program.
In addition to more than a decade of leadership at Fraser
Health, Dr. Barwich has been an active advocate in the palliative care community
and a significant contributor to policy development. She has served on a variety
of provincial and national initiatives and is currently President of the
Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians.
