The program will be led by two trained volunteers who will also provide individual support.
“This walking group is meant to provide a community activity that supports those who are experiencing what is arguably the most difficult time in their life,” said Patricia Blakeley, director of community support services at Acclaim Health. “Everyone’s journey through grief is unique, but being surrounded by others going through similar experiences fosters a strength that we hope will help people feel less alone.”
The decision to launch a walking group in Burlington was due to the success of the program in Oakville, said organizers.
“It is important for the healing process to provide a compassionate and safe space for people experiencing loss,” said Jackie Storer, supportive care coordinator at Carpenter Hospice. “We want to be able to provide a safe environment where participants can express their feelings and move towards healing, or simply enjoy the company of others going through a similar experience.”
