Amongst them was Montreal’s Kappy Flanders, who serves as co-chair for the Council on Palliative Care.
The appointments were made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada. Flanders was chosen specifically for her committed work in the palliative care field and public education sector.
Upon hearing the news, Flanders reaction was one of “shock and awe.”
“I was overwhelmed. I was excited,” she said. “I have been lucky enough to receive a couple of honours, but somehow I never thought about this one very deeply. It’s not why I do what I do…I feel honoured and privileged.”
Flanders’ contributions to the palliative care field include the establishment of the Eric M. Flanders Chair in Palliative Medicine at McGill University in 1994 – the first of its kind in North America. The Eric. M. Flanders Chair continues to be a strong presence within the McGill community and ensures a clear vision and strong programs in palliative care research, education and practice.
The Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967 during Canada’s centennial year to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
