Palliative Alliance Project

Categories: Care.

Through this project, tools and innovations have been developed and are now being applied in other long-term care facilities across Canada.  One of the project’s goals was to establish a community-university research alliance to create “sustainable, person-focused palliative care programs” that follow the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association’s Square of Care model. This research alliance created partnerships with Lakehead University, McMaster University, Halton Region and St. Joseph’s Care Group in Thunder Bay.  As Mary Lou Kelley, lead investigator and Professor in the School of Social Work, Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health at Lakehead University, explains, the project established a 40 resource toolkit for palliative care programs. Through these resources, Kelley says that Canadians can receive care that ensures comfort and dignity in their final days. Ultimately, Kelley says that “every Canadian deserves access to quality palliative and end-of-life care, regardless of age or place of residence.”
