The national organization is well on its way to meeting a $130-million fundraising goal for a new Shriners Hospital under construction in Montreal.
More than $115 million has been raised already, but more donations are needed. “Fundraising is still underway and if the public wanted to make a donation at Maffeo Sutton Park, the local Nanaimo and District Shrine Club #10 would ensure that those funds would be sent directly to the Montreal Shrine Hospital,” said Ralph Rayner, Nanaimo Shriners club secretary.
Next Wednesday the Exceptional Kids Care Campaign arrives by ferry in Departure Bay.
It’s one of the last stops in a cross-Canada tour that ends in Victoria. The Shriners will be easy to recognize in their “Fez Mobile,” a bright red vehicle with a roof decorated like the giant tassel on a Shriners’ cap.
They’ll be at Maffeo-Sutton Park from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Joined by Shriners from Nanaimo and Parksville, they’ll be available to answer questions about the organization.
Each year Shriners provide transportation, accommodation and specialized medical treatment for hundreds of children up to age 19, including many in Nanaimo and on Vancouver Island. Every year numerous children from Nanaimo and the Island benefit from services made available at Shriners hospitals, which aren’t covered by traditional health care.
Care is available to all children who need specialized care for serious burns, orthopedic afflictions or cerebral palsy.
“You don’t have to be a Shriner,” Rayner said.
