The South Indian State of Kerala is now moving rapidly towards the target of primary palliative care for all the needy with all of the 1000 plus LSGIs in the state making provision for palliative care in their annual budget for this year.
Palliative care services has already been implemented by 700 LSGIs in Kerala, with the remaining 300 expected to implement it before February 2013.
According to a news item in the India edition of ehospice, up to US$6 million has already been allotted for palliative care and related activities, including rehabilitation, for the year 2012-2013.
The programme is coordinated by the State Resource Centre of the National Rural Health Mission Palliative Care project based at the Institute of Palliative Medicine.
The nurse-led home care service run by LSGIs is envisaged to ensure participation of Government health workers and volunteers. The entry of thousands of new volunteers this year is expected to further enrich the programme.
