A Suitcase

One evening, as the ward lights dimmed and the day ended, the truth surfaced. It was not for him. He wanted the suitcase for his parents. They came from a faraway village, arriving at the hospital carrying heavy loads in their hands and on their heads-blankets, clothes, food wrapped in cloth, and everything they needed for weeks of hospital stays. The boy had watched them struggle, their backs bent under the weight, their tired faces hiding exhaustion behind smiles of reassurance. He noticed everything.

And so, in his quiet way, he had suppressed his own needs. He had asked for nothing for himself no toys, no comforts, no distractions. Instead, he held on to one single wish: a suitcase. A gift that would lighten the burdens his parents carried, even if only a little.

The suitcase was not just an object it was a symbol of his love. A child, in his final days, thinking not of his pain, but of the dignity and ease of his parents. His yearning for a simple object revealed the vastness of his heart, a love so deep it left us silent.

In that small, unexpected request, I saw what true love looked like: love that gives without keeping, love that carries the weight of others even when one’s own body is breaking. The boy’s mischievous laughter and playful demands masked the heaviness he carried inside a heaviness born not of illness alone, but of a child’s helplessness in watching his parents’ struggle.

That suitcase became more than luggage. It became a vessel of love.
