Families attending the glitzy Richard House Children’s Hospice Oscars event on Saturday 8 November were in for an extra treat, as James Bond actor Colin Salmon made a special appearance.
The Bethnal Green-born Hollywood star, who is also a patron of the Beckton-based hospice, was a special guest at the hospice’s sixth annual Oscars for families.
The red carpet event is a chance for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions at the hospice and their siblings to premiere films that they have created over the past year as members of the hospice’s Living Film clubs.
Through the clubs, the youngsters learn to produce and act in their own short movies, picking up skills like model making, animation and script writing. They also explore their creativity, build self esteem, and develop a voice to tell their own stories to the world around them.
After showing their films to a large audience of family members and supporters, the budding film makers were awarded Oscars for their hard work.
Speaking after the event, Colin said: “It is tremendous to be here and the movies have been of such a high standard. The editing and the professionalism of the children and young people is really impressive and it is great to spend time here and see what a special place Richard House is.”
The cameras and other equipment used by members of the Living Films clubs are provided by the charity Lifelites, which provides technology to children’s hospices around the country.
