Miles for Millions – Go the Distance for Children’s Palliative Care Worldwide

Categories: Care and Featured.

The International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) has launched Miles for Millions, a new global movement inviting people everywhere to take action in support of children living with life-limiting conditions.

Across the world, an estimated 21 million children require palliative care, yet fewer than 10% are able to access the support they need. Miles for Millions aims to help change this — bringing individuals, communities, and organisations together through the power of movement.

Whether walking, running, cycling, or moving in your own way, every mile counts. The campaign has already raised £14,000 for the CARES programme, supporting efforts to build expertise, strengthen services, and expand access to compassionate care for children and families worldwide.

At the heart of the initiative is the Miles for Millions app — designed to be inclusive and accessible for all. The app enables participants to track their activity, join a global community, and fundraise, while connecting physical movement with purpose and impact. It also helps raise awareness of the urgent need to improve children’s palliative care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access remains limited.

Professor Julia Downing, Chief Executive of ICPCN, said:
“One of the key challenges in children’s palliative care is securing sustainable funding. Compassionate care makes a real difference in the lives of children with life-limiting conditions and their families — easing pain, providing emotional support, and giving families hope. Miles for Millions is a chance for people everywhere to come together, take part, and go the distance to support this vital work.”

The campaign officially launched in Manila during the 4th ICPCN Conference, where 100 palliative care professionals took part in a symbolic one-mile walk. Teams in Ghana joined remotely, demonstrating the power of collective action across borders. In total, professionals from over 40 countries — including doctors, nurses, educators, parents, and caregivers — came together to share knowledge and mark the start of this global fundraising movement.

Looking ahead, Miles for Millions has already inspired a wide range of challenges planned for 2026, including family walks, 10k runs, Three Peaks Challenges, Ironman events, an El Camino trek, and even a 100-mile Nordic Pole challenge. No matter how you choose to move, everyone can play a part.

ICPCN extends special thanks to our major supporter, Phillip Snook, and his team at ExPD for developing the Miles for Millions app, and to all those who have supported the campaign to date.

People from all walks of life — including families, healthcare professionals, organisations, and individuals — are encouraged to get involved and help drive change.
