A new campaign has been launched in the United Kingdom by the Disabled Children’s Partnership that hopes to bring to life the realities of the challenges disabled children, young people and their families face in living a life that most take for granted.
Together for Short Lives, the national association for children’s palliative care, is a proud member of the Disabled Children’s Partnership – a growing coalition of more than 45 organisations – campaigning for improved health and social care for disabled children, young people and their families in England.
It is known that 43% of the British public don’t know anyone who is disabled, and that 97% of parents with a disabled child do not believe the public understands the challenges they face every day.
The campaign, the Secret Life of Us was developed in close partnership with parents and looks to change this. The campaign reveals the parts of the lives of parents with disabled children that most people simply do not see and aims to bring to life the realities of the challenges disabled children, young people and their families face when living a life many of us take for granted.
By doing this it is hoped that the public’s eyes will be opened to the difficulties faced by families on a day-to-day basis, removing the barriers to people being able to relate to the lives of disabled children and they will have a greater understanding, affinity and empathy for affected families.
The website describes the reason for the campaign: “We need to do this because without awareness and understanding, we cannot achieve real change. But, with increased awareness and public support we can make a real difference and provide disabled children, young people and their families access to the services they are entitled to, when they need them.”

As many people living in the UK as possible are needed to get on board with the campaign in order to achieve real change and provide disabled children, young people and their families access to the services they are entitled to, when they need them.
