What will palliative care look like in 20 years time?

Unfortunately, none of us have a crystal ball to reveal what palliative care will look like in 20 years time. However, King’s College London is offering you an event that will allow a peek into what the future could hold and the challenges to be overcome to forge the way forward.

On Monday 26 June, 2017, the Cicely Saunders Institute Events Series presents The Michal Galazka Celebration Study Day entitled, Palliative Care in 20 Years Time: Future Predictions and Global Challenges.  

WHA resolution
The World Health Assembly resolution 2014 calls on all governments to deliver locally appropriate, quality palliative care based on evidence based research. As populations age globally, the provision of high quality, effective and affordable care at the end of life is a challenge for high, middle and low income countries.

This all day meeting will look at the latest scientific research in global palliative care and ask how we can ensure that we can deliver high quality care at the end of life.

The day will conclude with tributes to Michal Galazka, who pioneered international hospice education through the work of his organisation, the Hospice Education Institute.

Speakers will include:

• Professor Irene Higginson, Professor of Palliative Care and Director, King’s College London, Cicely Saunders Institute
• Dr Richard Harding, Reader in Palliative Care, King’s College London, Cicely Saunders Institute
• Dame Professor Barbara Monroe, former Chief Executive St Christopher’s Hospice and Trustee of Marie Curie
• Rev Dr Peter Speck, Honorary Senior Lecturer, King’s College London
• Professor Julia Downing, ICPCN Chief Executive and Honorary Professor, King’s College London Cicely Saunders Institute.

The event will be held at the Dinwoodie Lecture Theater, The Cicely Saunders Institute, King’s College London, with a registration fee of £25 before 31 May and £50 after that date. Free places are available for students and booking for the event closes on 23 June. 

A  sandwich lunch will be provided and the day will conclude with an evening reception to honour the life and achievements of Michal Galazka. The study day has been awarded 4 RCP CPD points.
