Australian parliament debates palliative care following WHA resolution

Speakers unanimously supported Monday’s private member’s motion in the House of Representatives from Amanda Rishworth, the shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Health.

Ms Rishworth’s motion called for recognition of the inevitable increase in demand for palliative care services for people of all ages, and of the important role of those in the health workforce involved in the delivery of quality palliative care.

The motion also called for government to increase community awareness and understanding of palliative care and the importance of advance care planning, ensuring the needs and wishes of palliative care patients and their carers are met.
