Compassionate Communities in Action : Global Stories of Care, Loss and Connection

Categories: Community Engagement.

by Dr Emma Hodges and Dr Manjula Patel.  20 years after the publication of Compassionate Cities, Public Health, and Palliative Care, Professor Allan Kellehear OBE’s book is as relevant today as it was then. Discussions with people working in the field of compassionate communities suggested that it was time to focus a text on practice-based examples.

The questions are often about how to start, what is the structure, who is involved, how is it funded, what are the activities and how is a compassionate community initiative sustained.

Every community is different and whilst there are common ingredients and challenges, one of the wonderful things about the compassionate community movement internationally is the variety.

This new book aims to tell the stories of the people, places and activities that are leading change in their community, whatever shape and size that is. The book does cover some of the well-known examples, and includes also new areas, people who wouldn’t recognise the contribution to the field.
