Fellowship in Palliative Care – A Global Platform for Co-Learning – Announces 2022 programme.

The Fellowship in Palliative Care is an advanced course run by the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kerala, India, in partnership with Sanjeevan Palliative Care Project, Pondicherry, India; St Christopher’s Hospice, London, United Kingdom and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bangladesh.

The six- month course is designed as a distance education program with contact sessions based on principles of adult learning. This Fellowship Program is conducted through the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut, India, at the request of WHO as part of its designation as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Community Participation in Palliative Care and Long-term Care.

The objective of the program is to deliver a good quality training program, affordable to participants from low- and middle-income countries.

The course will cover foundations, concepts, skills in organising and managing palliative care services and application of these in local situations faced by the participant.

The Fellowship Program aims to give participants – palliative care workers – an in-depth knowledge of core issues in organising palliative care at the grassroots level. They will also become well versed with recent advances and challenges in palliative care and community participation regionally, nationally, and globally.

Those who successfully complete the course will be issued a certificate.

More than 200 candidates from 52 countries have so far successfully completed training under the Fellowship Program. This network of trained ‘fellows’ continues to support each other after completion of the course.

The program won the  European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) & European Palliative Care Academy (EUPCA) Leadership Award in 2021. as an example of outstanding leadership capacity building programme worldwide.

The last date for submission of request for enrolment is 30 November 2021.

 

TARGET GROUP

This course is aimed at people working/ interested in the field of palliative care. Clinical staff or program managers/ coordinators or community volunteers are eligible to apply. This training program will be particularly useful for trainers and program managers (individuals in management positions in Non-Government Organizations and government agencies) in palliative care. The main target participants include:

  • Program managers of health care projects
  • Palliative care trainers
  • Social workers in palliative care
  • Non-clinical volunteers/ staff/ paid carers
  • Health care advocacy groups
  • Doctors/nurses who want to further explore non-medical aspects of Palliative Care
  • Any other person interested in learning about setting up of palliative care services

 

MEDIUM OF INTERACTION

The course will be in English. As the course will be delivered online, access to a good internet connection and a laptop/ desktop will be required.

 

MODE OF TRAINING & ESTIMATED TIME REQUIREMENTS

The six- month online course is designed as a distance education program based on principles of adult learning. Duration of the course will be sixty hours. Online sessions will start on 7 February 2022.

Schedule of Online sessions:

7 February – 11 February (6 hours / day x 5 days = 30 hours)
First Monday of every month from March 2022 to July 2022 (6 hours/ day x 5 days = 30 hours)
The Online Learning Platform with recorded sessions /discussion forum/other resources will be accessible to registered candidates from 15 January 2022 to 31 December 2022
In addition, the candidate is estimated to spend an additional 120 hours over six months for other activities related to the course:

  • Preparation of presentations
  • Online sessions with mentors
  • Learning through key videos and resources made available online
  • Preparation and submission of assignments
  • Peer evaluation of assignments
  • Participation in the discussion forum

There will also be 6-8 additional workshops on palliative care related subjects by international experts. Attendance in these extra workshops is optional.

Course Fee: Course fee is INR 7500 (US$ 100)
