In the first article, Dr Lanka J Dissanayake, National Program Officer of the World Health Organization, and Dr Neelamani Paranagama, Director, National Cancer Control Programme, Sri Lanka, explain the current situation in the country, and go on to evaluate the progress made in the health sector since the civil war ended. They conclude by explaining the community-based rehabilitation project in operation there, which aims to empower society.

The second article focuses on the professional training programme in palliative care launched in Sri Lanka, the first of which was held on 18 and 19 May. The programme is offered by Institute of Palliative Medicine, Calicut India, in association with College of General Practitioners, Sri Lanka.

In other news from ehospice India, IAPC is calling for abstracts for its international conference, which is being held on 14-16 February 2014 at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The theme of the conference is ‘Evidence Based Palliative Medicine’.

Registration is compulsory for presenting a paper at the conference. The deadline for submissions is 31 August 2013. 

Abstracts should be submitted via email to iapcon2014@gmail.com and copied to sushmabhatnagar1@gmail.com Alternatively, users can login and upload the abstract. Faxed abstracts will not be considered.
