Current chief executive, Richard Blewitt, leaves HelpAge International next month, after more than six years in post, for a job with the United Nations.
Under Richard’s leadership, HelpAge has achieved landmarks such as the Hilton Humanitarian Prize, a new partnership with the World Health Organization and the establishment of Age International.
The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance (WPCA) and HelpAge have worked together on a number of key projects; calling for increased access to palliative care and for palliative care to be recognised as a human right, and drawing attention to the care and support needs of those living with and affected by HIV and their caregivers.
Recently, HelpAge International were involved in producing the report ‘Ageing in the Twenty-first Century: A Celebration and a Challenge’, which highlights the challenges of ageing societies and problems with access to effective pain medications and palliative care.
Alongside the report, HelpAge and UNFPA created a list of 60 inspiring and influential older people over 60, which included Dr Rajagopal, director of Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences and chair of Pallium India, who was nominated for his work fighting to relieve the suffering of people living with and dying from life-limiting diseases.
