The Kingdom of Thailand has in recent years become a country in “transition from a nation of developing status, to one of international standing” (Discover Thailand) in many areas. Up until recently, palliative care has been ‘provided by a small number of dedicated individuals in the country’ (ehospice, 2013) and most of the palliative care services are carried out in hospital type settings.

In 2013, Thailand requested for and received 45 million Baht (almost $1.5 million) worth of funding from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation to develop palliative care in the country (ehospice, 2013). The funding received will be channelled to seven projects aimed at promoting and delivering palliative care in Thailand.

One of the seven projects: ‘Conducting Training of Nurses in Palliative Care’ saw Associate Professor Dr Srivieng Pairojkul, president of the Thai Palliative Care Society and a group of nurses visit Hospis Malaysia for an educational tour on community palliative care.

Dr Pairojkul plans to use Hospis Malaysia’s standards of services as one of the role models to emulate back in Thailand.
