The initiative was launched by Minister of Health Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai during the visit by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Hospis Malaysia on 13 September 2012. The Malaysian Ministry of Health plans to develop dedicated paediatric palliative units, extending facilities in public hospitals to include young patients suffering from terminal illnesses. Paediatric palliative care teams, led by paediatricians and supported by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, will also be developed. “Their role will be to provide inpatient and outpatient care as well as day care and home-based care,” said Liow, adding that training and specialisation in the area is ongoing.
