Palliative Medicine is a highly ranked peer reviewed journal with a focus on research within the field of palliative care. It carries editorials, original papers, review articles, case reports and correspondence.
The journal team have been working with authors over the last few years to focus on the quality of papers we publish to advance knowledge, policy and theory in our field. As part of that process we have a small team of editors who work with the editor in chief to share responsibility for advising on which submitted papers should go for review, and making decisions about which papers are selected for publication.
Editor in Chief, Dr Catherine Walshe from the International Observatory on End of Life Care at Lancaster University says: “the role of ‘screening editors’, as we call them, is essential, as they bring a wide knowledge of palliative care practice, policy and research to the process to ensure that we make the soundest possible publishing decisions.”
Screening editors can be based anywhere in the world, as the work is all completed online, at a time of day to suit the editor. We’re an international journal, and are keen to draw from the widest possible range of knowledge and expertise.
The central part of the role essentially involves screening all papers submitted to the journal to determine if they are to be sent for external review or not based on an appraisal of their contribution to knowledge and if they have been rigorously and appropriately conducted.
We also hope that you will be an ambassador for the journal, encouraging high quality submissions, and acting as a resource for people interested in publishing with us. All our current editors hold substantive posts outside the journal as researchers and/or clinicians, so that they can bring this experience to their work with the journal.
Could this be you? If you are interested in finding out more about this role then you can see full details at pmj.sagepub.com where the is a role description and indication of the experience we seek.
