Palliative care training at Khonkaen University, Thailand

Categories: Education.

We have been working with Khonkaen University’s Faculty of Medicine for four years, helping them to run training programs for health care professionals in Thailand and also in establishing palliative care services in Khonkaen and the surrounding neighbourhood. This partnership has established short term (2-3 day) and intermediate term (6-8 week) courses for doctors and nurses in Thailand and also the neighbouring country, Laos.

This training is part of the work of the Thai Palliative Care Society, coordinated by Dr Srivieng Pairojkul and supported by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, to develop palliative care in Thailand.

The next steps are to expand the core team, initiate long term courses and training programs for volunteers and to facilitate the development of community based palliative care programs.

The current course is the second Advanced Course that we are running here. It is interactive in nature and explores clinical, psychosocial and spiritual issues in palliative care from a very practical point of view. Being interactive, the course draws on the clinical experience of the candidates to enrich each session.

Khonkaen has now established itself as the most active clinical and academic hub for palliative care in Thailand. Palliative care physicians willing to help with voluntary clinical work are welcome to contact Dr Pairojkul.
