Dr Dalva Yukie Matsumoto, director of Brazil’s National Academy of Palliative Care (ANCP), and Dr. Ricardo Tavares de Carvalho, scientific director of the ANCP, were among those paying tribute to this pioneer of palliative care in Brazil.

Dr Ricardo Tavares was quoted on the ANCP website saying that Prof Marco Tulio introduced Brazil to the philosophy of palliative care and that he had brought the realization that assistance in the final stages of life in the country had to be different.

Dr Dalva noted that all great palliative care services in Sao Paulo had benefited from Prof Marco Tulio’s influence.

Prof Marco Tullio studied medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, before completing a residency at the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in pathology at the Federal University of Sao Paulo.

He was one of the founding members of the ANCP. He was also a founding partner of the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) and a member of its advisory council for three terms.

He received a number of honours in recognition of his work in palliative care, among them an award from the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology for his pioneering work in palliative care.

Prof Marco Tulio organized electives in palliative care and thanatology. He authored numerous scientific papers and frequently delivered lectures and courses. One of his best known works was the translation into Portuguese of the book: ‘The Ticket Platform’, by Derek Doyle, which he undertook alongside his wife, Professor Grace Mota Figueiredo.
