Work begins on Australia’s second children’s hospice

Categories: Care.

Hummingbird House is a joint initiative of Queensland Kids and Wesley Mission Brisbane. The organisation will provide vital palliative care and respite support to Queensland families with children affected by life-limiting conditions.

Paul Quilliam, Hummingbird House General Manager, said: “There are only two children’s hospices in Australia, serving a population of 23 million, compared with 49 children’s hospices in the UK, with a population of 63 million. There is a clear, significant support gap in the paediatric palliative care landscape in Queensland.

“At any one time in Queensland approximately 3,700 families live with, love and support a child with a life-limiting condition. These families experience significant pressures. They desperately need a break, a place to go where their children will be cared for, where they can reconnect as a couple and as a family and where, when the time comes, they will have a supportive environment to say goodbye to their child.

“They need Hummingbird House.”
