ehospice response to the Kenyan crisis

The four-day siege, which began on Saturday when gunmen marched into the complex, firing grenades and automatic weapons, resulted in the death of 61 civilians and six soldiers with close to 200 people wounded.

ehospice staff, management and directors have sent messages of sympathy and support to colleagues in Kenya.  Dr Zipporah Ali, Executive Director of the Kenyan Hospice and Palliative Care Association (KEHPCA) reports that KEPHCA staff are all “very distressed and saddened at the whole situation. So many lives lost, so many wounded. We pray that they will not attack again as they have continuously broadcasted that this is only the beginning. I am with the Kenya Red Cross team right now looking at how counselling can be offered. Keep Kenya in your prayers.”

David Praill, the chairman of the ehospice board, writes: “On behalf of the global hospice and palliative care community, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone caught up in the horrific attack in Nairobi. We are aware of how the various communities are pulling together and support networks are now being put in place for those who have been injured and all families who have lost loved ones.  There will always be people who believe that violence is the only way of getting their views across or their voice heard – but we stand with those who would rather care for everyone in need whatever their race, creed, sexual orientation or level of wealth. Unconditional care and support is the only antidote to undiscerning hatred and violence.”
