The Ministry of Health (MoH)’s
Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) division, African Population and Health
Research Center (APHRC), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and other
stakeholders on Thursday launched the first NCD knowledge sharing portal in
Kenya.
The portal acts as a
one-stop shop for all information on NCDs in the country including, ongoing
projects, publications, downloads of NCD-related documents, opportunities among
others.
Speaking during the launch, the
head of NCDs Division at MOH Dr Ibrahim Amira said that this portal will
provide a systematic approach to NCD data collection and information sharing,
as opposed to previous haphazard ways of sharing information.
Professor Elijah Ogola from
the University of Nairobi said that the portal has the potential to fill in research
gaps in the area of NCDs.
“NCDs account
for approximately 50% of hospital in-patients in public hospitals and 40% of
hospital mortality.” Said Prof. Ogola.
Registered users can upload
completed research projects, on-going projects and programs, announcements etc.
The goal of the portal goes beyond the sharing of information to that of reducing
the burden of NCDs in Kenya.
Anyone with useful NCD-related
information from Kenya is encouraged to post it for sharing with the NCD
community at the portal.
