She explained the concept of palliative hospice care and tried to dispel some of the myths around it, the biggest one being that it is only applicable to the last weeks of life.
Palliative care is the care of patients with an active, progressive and far advanced disease. The focus of the care is the relief and prevention of suffering and ensuring quality of life.
As the national charity for hospice care, HPCA (Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa) champion and support the work of more than 107-member organisations, which provide hospice care to around 120 000 people across South Africa each year.
