The Hospice Leadership and Management module to be offered as part of the already popular and well-received MSc in Voluntary Sector Management is one of the most exciting new developments in postgraduate degrees. This is a joint Hospice UK and Cass Business School development.
My name is Atul Patel and I am the Academic Leader for the MSc in Voluntary Sector Management. I am responsible for maintaining the high quality of teaching standards on the programme and recruiting the most suitable students. I bring 30 years of work and consultancy experience to the programme gained across the public and voluntary sectors.
I am genuinely excited to be involved in developing the new module. I feel its contents will prepare students to lead and manage today’s challenging hospice environment; learn to anticipate the volatility brought about in the sector by a constantly changing socio-economic landscape and generate appropriate responses to sustain thriving organisations. The module will encourage students to draw on their own experiences and also learn from a highly experienced faculty and fellow students drawn from a diverse and vibrant range of organisations from within the voluntary sector.
The structure of the programme is unique in its offer. The core and pathway approach offers students an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills essential for modern management. The core modules which include inputs such as understanding the voluntary sector, marketing, fundraising and managing resources, build the foundations for strong management before moving onto the Voluntary Sector Management pathway modules focused on organisations, leadership, leading and managing change, managing people and teams.
The Hospice Leadership and Management module will combine the rigour of a highly respected management school with a practical and applied approach. The module will be delivered by management practitioners with years of first-hand experience and ongoing involvement in the hospice and palliative care sector. In addition there will be guest speakers with specialist interest in all aspects of the hospice sector presenting the latest issues and exploring the most cutting edge developments.
Cass has a strong reputation within the charity and voluntary sector. Recent and past graduates of the programmes have commented on how influential the MSc in Voluntary Sector Management has been to their leadership roles and their careers.
The programme will contribute hugely in your development as a leader and manager with the aim of strengthening the valuable role hospices have in maximising reach and influence to people who benefit from hospice care, and those who set national policy and commission hospice care.
