Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Eluned Morgan MS, has been hearing from staff at the UK’s leading end of life charity about their work in Wales and across the UK.

Ms Morgan MS visited Marie Curie Cymru teams at their office in Pencoed, where she met with teams from the across the charity. Pencoed is also home to Marie Curie’s UK-wide Support Line, which is part of the charity’s Information and Support service.

As the UK’s leading end of life charity, Marie Curie provides expert care for people with any illness they are likely to die from, as well as supporting their family and friends, in hospices and their own homes.

Marie Curie’s Information and Support service also provides practical information and support on all aspects of life with terminal illness, dying and bereavement.

During her visit, the Cabinet Secretary met some of the Marie Curie workforce, including nurses and information and support staff.

The Cabinet Secretary heard about the topics people call the Support Line to talk about – from accepting a terminal diagnosis, to navigating the benefits system and seeking support from specialist energy support officers about fuel bills.

After meeting with support line workers, the Cabinet Secretary joined a roundtable discussion with staff from across the charity in Wales where she asked questions about their day to day work and projects to improve palliative and end of life care in Wales.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Eluned Morgan, said:

“This has been an eye-opening visit to Marie Curie’s Bocam Park office – hearing about the vast array of support the charity provides to people has been truly heartwarming.

“Understanding that people in communities across Wales, who are at their most vulnerable, can get support from people who are both expert in their field and passionate about ensuring personalised care, is wonderful.“I look forward to continuing to work with the charity and their partners to ensure everyone has support through death, dying and bereavement across Wales.”

Marie Curie Cymru Associate Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Jon Antoniazzi, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Cabinet Secretary to our Bocam Park offices today.

“For us, having these conversations about the work we do and the impact it has on people across Wales is vital to ensure those in power are aware of the plethora of things we do to support people who are dying, and those close to them, to have a good end of life experience.

“Thanks to Eluned and her team for showing such interest in our work and engaging so openly with staff during this visit – we look forward to continuing to work with the Welsh Government to ensure everyone has access to good end of life care, wherever they are, whatever the illness.”
