The Eastern India Palliative Care Project (EIPC), a UK-registered charity founded by Dr Sankha Mitra, is working to introduce good palliative and end of life care in West Bengal, which has a population of 91 million.
EIPC works in close partnership with a range of organisations, including NGOs, government hospitals and local community groups, and has developed partnerships with Pallium India and the Indian Association of Palliative Care.
The Partnership has been involved in funding clinics and training and has made a Bengali-language documentary about palliative care as well as launching the first Bengali monthly magazine about cancer.
The event, ‘Music in life, death and palliative care‘, is being held on 7 July at the Nehru Centre in Mayfair, London – the cultural wing of the High Commission of India.
Viola da Cunha, a mezzo soprano, accompanied by Yuki Osedo on piano, will lead the evening of music, which will include a song cycle using poems written by a hospice patient.
The evning will also include an introduction by David Oliviere, former Director of Education and Training at St Christopher’s Hospice, London; a presentation by Dr Mitra, Chairman of the EIPC Project; and a Rabindra Sangeet performance by Dr Susmita Ghosh Mitra from Kolkata.
