Give and Gain Day: Carillion employees volunteer at Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice

Give and Gain Day, held this year on 20 May, is an international celebration of the incredible power of employee volunteering.

To mark the day, thousands of people, from hundreds of companies across 36 countries, spent a day volunteering their time to support their community in a number of different ways.

In Liverpool, Carillion employees – who are working on the construction of the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital – met with their local hospice, Zoë’s Place Baby Hospice, to discuss the hospice’s wish list for support.

One of the biggest jobs that they needed support with was their sensory garden.

The garden is surrounded by buildings and therefore gets very little sunshine. Due to this the turf, which was laid many years before, had turned to moss.

The hospice’s wish was to make more use of the space for the young children they care for.

The Carillion team approached one of their subcontractors, Murraywood, to help them. Using a drone, Murraywood took an aerial shot of the space so that a plan could be made.

In total 19 Carillion employees supported the renovations by volunteering their time and Murraywood supplied a digger and all the materials needed.

Together they transformed the space by removing a tree, digging up the lawn (as it doesn’t get any sunlight) and laying astro turf, relocating and repainting planters, jet washing the paving stones and sealing the block work.

Zoë’s Place in Liverpool now has a new and improved outdoor space which the children can enjoy spending time in and use for play as well as much needed respite.
