Hospice café welcomes 1000 visitors since pandemic restrictions lifted

Categories: Care.

A weekly café offering support to people living with a life-limiting condition or who’ve been bereaved, has welcomed over 1,000 visitors through its doors since all covid restrictions were finally lifted last March.

First launched in 2019, the Treetops Hospice Wellbeing Café offers an informal way for people to find out about the care available to them or their loved ones. Treetops staff and volunteers are available to chat whilst visitors enjoy free hot drinks and homemade cakes.

It’s nice to be treated normally here. When people are ill, others tend to treat you differently when that’s not what you need. It’s helped me and come at the right time.

My diagnosis knocked me for six because it forced me to stop doing what I loved doing. It was wonderful to have people to talk to, that understand what I am going through.

During the covid pandemic, the hospice, based in Risley, was forced to close its doors to visitors but continued to support patients and families online and through telephone calls.

Alison Hembrow, Wellbeing, Support and Information Manager, explained more:

“The café is a lovely, welcoming space which looks out onto our beautiful grounds and gardens. We welcome people to come along with family and friends and find out more about our care.

“Each week, we regularly welcome 50 or more people to the café and we’re so pleased to reach this significant milestone.”

The Café runs every Thursday, 10am-3.00pm. It’s one of several Treetops Wellbeing Services aimed at helping people maintain their quality of life. It is open to anyone affected by a life limiting illness or bereaved and their family members, carers and friends who are looking for some help.

The charity provides support from diagnosis onwards for patients with conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart and respiratory conditions.

This year, we are very proud to be celebrating 40 years of caring for people and their families in our local community. During this time, we have supported thousands of patients with end-of-life nursing care and bereavement counselling.

We have achieved this amazing milestone thanks to our dedicated volunteers who help across the whole hospice and in our charity shops, our hard-working staff team, and our supporters, past and present.

Last year, our team of Hospice at Home nurses provided over 20,000 hours of care to terminally-ill patients, working day and night to give much-needed support.

Our team of bereavement counsellors provided over 4,500 counselling sessions – more than 900 of them to children and young people. Wellbeing team members provide valuable information and support to those who need it.

Treetops is doing all it can to continue to support those in most need and welcomes donations to ensure the future of the hospice and its services: www.treetopshospice.org.uk/donate
