Hospice education team wins innovation award for end of life training

Categories: Education.

The award was given in recognition of the whole NHS Health Education East of England team’s work in the delivery and evaluation of education programmes to improve the quality of end of life care provision across the east of England during 2013.

The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire ABC End of Life Education project team includes The Hospice of St Francis, Keech Hospice Care, Isabel Hospice and Peace Hospice Care.

Sarah Russell, Director of Education at The Hospice of St Francis, said: “We are all delighted to receive this award in recognition of our ABC End of Life Education programme. The programme addressed a real need in care homes and the key to its success was its blended learning which included both e-learning and care home centred support, plus the flexibility for carers to train at a time to suit them.”

Peace Hospice Care Chief Executive, Sue Plummer, added: “I am delighted that we have been recognised for the hard work carried out by the team in increasing awareness of end of life care issues and to improve our systems and internal processes. One of our strategic objectives is to make sure that we continue to provide the highest standards of care and this achievement helps to demonstrate that we are making good progress.”

The ABC End of Life Education Project was implemented to give staff in care homes the tools to look after people towards the end of life, focusing on symptoms, pain management and emotional support and helping to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

The programme is a free education programme, offered to all care home, primary and secondary health and social care staff not working in specialist palliative care but who do frequently play a major role in meeting palliative care needs.

The award follows the recent Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST) report which advised that the ABC training programme should be the preferred type of training commissioned in nursing homes, due to being the most cost effective and enjoying an excellent completion rate of 97% by care home staff.
