As the flagship event for the hospice and palliative care community, Hospice UK’s national conference receives hundreds of abstracts from hospice and palliative care practitioners who are keen to share their work as oral or poster presentations and benefit from the opportunity to grow ideas and thinking with their peers.
An abstract has to work hard to shine out for the selection panel; your brilliant project relies on just a short paragraph to convey its appeal so make sure the abstract is compelling. Here are some top tips for getting your abstract accepted:
- Report on something that is of interest, relevant, topical or important.
- Make sure the title is interesting and don’t exceed the recommended length.
- Make sure you complete all the author/s’ details and that they agree the final content of the abstract.
- Follow any guidance provided and keep to the word limit.
- Make sure you spell-check your work.
- Make sure it is clear:
– Why you did/are doing the work (This is your chance to explain succinctly the background to the project.)
– What is the gap in practice or evidence (This information will form part of the background.)
– What is the aim of the work (What does the work/project aim to achieve and for who?)
– How you did / are doing the work (What are/were the methods used to deliver or evaluate the work/project?)
– What you found/are finding. Make sure it is related to your aim and methods. (What are/were the anticipated results and how will they make a difference for hospice and palliative care?)
- What do the results mean? (Do the conclusions seem logical from the completed or anticipated results and/or are there recommendations for hospice and palliative care?)
- What is your take home message? (Again, this will form part of the conclusion.)
