Princess Alice Hospice charity Coronation chair that’s fit for a King

Categories: Fundraising.

Dedicated volunteers at Princess Alice Hospice have been finding crafty ways to weave fundraising opportunities into their Coronation celebrations. They’ve knitted crowns, dug flower beds, and even created the most magnificent replica Coronation Chair for visitors to take ‘throne selfies’.

The Hospice Man Shed volunteers and attendees – known as the Shedders – stepped up to the regal challenge when they were asked to create a throne that could be used for the Hospice’s own Coronation celebrations.

In under two weeks they had dismantled a donated wardrobe, done some extensive research and created a replica of the Coronation Chair that’s fit for a king.

The actual Coronation Chair was used by King Charles III in Westminster Abbey and is more than 700 years old; the Shedders worked tirelessly to create a beautiful modern-day version which was displayed at the Hospice’s Coronation lunch and enjoyed by staff, volunteers, families and Wellbeing visitors over the bank holiday weekend.

The Royal links continue, and the Hospice is proud to have its very own Charles and Camilla in their volunteering team.

Charles is a new gardening volunteer and shares his royal namesake’s love of gardening; since taking up his role, he has been busy digging over flower beds and helped create the marvelous display of blooms in the Hospice grounds.

Volunteer Camilla gives her time at weekends in the Hospice shop in Twickenham and, like Queen Consort Camilla, loves books and reading.

Other volunteers have been raising funds for the Hospice by knitting Coronation crowns and filling them with chocolates to sell to supporters.

So far, they have raised an amazing £600 and are well on the way to reaching their annual fundraising target of £1000.

Princess Alice Hospice: For Compassion. For Excellence. For People. For Living.

Princess Alice Hospice has, for more than 35 years, provided free, high-quality, specialist end of life care to tens of thousands of people across a large part of Surrey, south west London and Middlesex. Today, at any one time, Hospice nurses, doctors and other specialist staff are looking after more than 1000 people in need.  The Hospice’s mission is to reach out to even more people by delivering outstanding care to those that need it. To enable us to do this, we must rely on the commitment and support of our communities who help us to raise vital funds.

£10 million is needed each year to provide our vital services. With limited NHS funding provided by CCGs, which represents circa 24% of our expenditure on charitable activities, in more normal times, the balance is raised through legacies, fundraising, dedicated shop units and investments. It is only the generous support of our communities and beyond, that makes it possible to do our work.
