St Michael’s Hospice in Hastings, St Clare Hospice in Essex and Grace House Children’s Hospice in Sunderland went head-to-head with one other charity in their region last week, as part of People’s Millions competition, run by the Big Lottery and ITV.
As reported on ehospice, the public were shown appeal films on the ITV regional news programmes from 25-27 November and were asked to vote for the one they thought most deserved the grant.
And the public firmly got behind the sector, with each of the three hospices taking home the money.
People’s Millions finalists were required to explain exactly what the Big Lottery grant would be spent on, and this is what the winning hospices said:
St Michael’s Hospice in Hastings has secured a £49,998 Big Lottery Fund grant:
“The money will go towards transforming our Day Therapy service to create a welcoming and creative space enabling people to come together and help them share their experiences, worries and fears. Alongside this, the funding will allow us to offer 400 extra places each year as well as a range of brand new activities including an Art Therapy Studio, Photographic Suite, Internet Café and Wifi connections.
St Clare West Essex Hospice in Harlow has secured a £49,832 Big Lottery Fund grant:
“The grant will enable St Clare West Essex Hospice Care Trust to provide a landscaped garden and patio area with furniture, plants and water features for families. It will be next to the family room on the Inpatient Unit and will be maintained by volunteers and patients. The aim of the programme is to provide a private, tranquil space to relax away from the care area, and provide somewhere for outdoor dining, which will have therapeutic benefits for families and patients.”
Grace House Children’s Hospice Gardens in Sunderland has secured a £50,000 Big Lottery Fund grant:
“Grace House Children’s Hospice Gardens, will create a fully accessible garden, including a sensory garden and vegetable patch. The project will bring together hospice users, local schools and the wider community to develop a therapeutic and welcoming environment for terminally ill children and their families, whilst educating participants on the benefits of growing produce and healthy eating.”
Since The People’s Millions began in 2005 the competition has funded over 520 diverse community projects UK-wide with £27.8 million in Big Lottery Fund good cause money. This year across the UK up to £3.8 million will be awarded by the public.
