We were delighted to be featured on Sky News on Wednesday 16 October as part of an article and film exploring palliative care in the UK.
Amidst the current funding crisis, reporter Ashish Joshi visited and spoke with staff, patients, carers and family members at the hospice and out in the community.
Acting Chief Executive Jan Noble was interviewed as was Clinical Nurse Specialist (Learning Disabilities) Phoebe Mooney.
Phoebe was filmed during a home visit to her patient, Tim, and his mother, Valerie.
The film also featured our Create and Chat art group, sessions in the gym, a namaste care group and a patient on the wards.
It was broadcast as the Assisted Dying bill was introduced into parliament.
At St Christopher’s Hospice we acknowledge the wide-ranging views held by the public and professionals on Assisted Dying.
Society and its expectations around end of life is changing and we want to work with a broad range of stakeholders to better understand people’s preferences and how they are best met by organisations like St Christopher’s in the future.
This will help us work towards, and achieve, our enduring ambition to offer care and support that is highly individualised and responsive to people’s needs and wishes.
The notion of Assisted Dying has significant implications for society, policy makers, health systems, hospices and more. It calls for informed, wide reaching debate and increased understanding about why someone might request an assisted death, who responds and how.
At St Christopher’s, we are committed to initiating and supporting a broad range of conversations about this complex issue, introducing a variety of materials and evidence to shape debate. Then we intend to share our learning with policy makers, other hospices and any other stakeholders interested to hear more.
Through these discussions and without assuming the answer we will explore, together, whether Assisted Dying could or should be considered to be part of palliative care in the UK in the future.
