South African partnership opportunity for a UK hospice

Categories: Community Engagement.

The hospice provides home-based palliative care free of charge to 920 patients with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses and their families in and around Rustenburg. Its vision is to provide excellent palliative care to all, supporting quality of life and dignity in death.

The hospice has a strong networking partnership with other community-based organisations to help provide a holistic approach to patients. Currently the hospice team is made up of five professional nurses, three psychosocial carers, 32 community careworkers and four volunteer careworkers.

The main objectives for a possible twinning partnership are:

  • to develop mutual understanding to learn from each other
  • to work together to develop friendship links, exchange experiences, knowledge and skills
  • common motivation to provide appropriate palliative care to dying people and support to their families
  • to encourage both personal and team development within the hospices
  • practice useful and emotional support to people who are working in different environments
  • raise awareness of the needs of the dying people and the benefits of palliative care in less developed countries.
