Mark Jarman-Howe will be stepping down from the role of St Helena Hospice Chief Executive in September after 12 years of service.
Mr Jarman-Howe has led St Helena Hospice through several years of significant change including the pandemic and recent work to secure the charity’s financial position in response to a challenging financial climate.
As an influential leader in the local health system and in the wider end of life care sector, Mark’s distinctive voice has contributed to national debates relating to the funding of hospice care and extending access to advance care planning.
On his resignation, Mr Jarman-Howe said:
“It has been a privilege to be Chief Executive of St Helena Hospice for the past 12 years. It is a role I have thoroughly enjoyed and found immensely purposeful and rewarding, even during some challenging periods.
“I am proud of how we have extended our reach and become known throughout our sector for innovative approaches to integration of care, governance arrangements and income generation.
“I have been very fortunate to work with committed and constructive trustees, and will always be grateful to them for their advice and support.
“Having worked with our talented and capable team to deliver strong results last year and put in place a plan to secure our future, I feel now is an opportune time to move on to a new personal challenge and allow others to shape the next iteration of our strategy.
“I wish to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to colleagues across St Helena Hospice for their dedication and passion in supporting local people to face incurable illness and bereavement.”
Dr Fran Hyde, Chair of Trustees, said:
“The Board of Trustees is grateful to Mark for his capable leadership and strategic vision during his tenure which has allowed us to introduce new services such as our 24/7 SinglePoint service and enabled us to support a greater number of people each year, whilst gaining a national reputation for integration of care and innovation in income generation.”
Interim arrangements are being made and information will be released in due course.

St Helena Hospice was established in 1985 and provides specialist end of life care and support for people living in north east Essex who face incurable illness and bereavement.
The emphasis for this charity is about quality of life and services include the Hospice, Hospice in the Home, bereavement support, and SinglePoint 24/7 advice line and rapid response. More than 90% of support is carried out by the Hospice in the Home team in people’s own place of residence. 80% of the income needed to run St Helena is raised through the local community giving donations; buying in St Helena shops; playing Your Hospice Lottery; and leaving gifts in Wills. Vital funds for St Helena are also raised through supporting its commercial and social enterprise activities.
