It’s a question many healthcare professionals face when caring for patients with complex pain. While opioids remain an important part of pain management, they are not always the answer and knowing what to do when pain persists can be challenging. After many requests, OxCERPC is leading a new pilot study day: “This Pain is Not Responding to an Opioid: Knowledge to Inform the Next Step.” by experts from the Palliative Care Formulary.
This practical course, due to be held on Monday 28th September 2026, is designed to help clinicians build confidence in assessing and managing opioid-unresponsive pain.
Through expert teaching, case discussions and real-world examples, delegates will explore the science behind pain mechanisms and gain a clearer understanding of when and how to consider alternative approaches. Topics will include the use of medications such as Methadone, Ketamine and Clonidine, alongside strategies for managing pain across different stages of illness.
What makes this course particularly valuable is its focus on translating knowledge into practice. Delegates will leave with practical insights they can apply immediately, helping to improve patient comfort, support informed prescribing decisions and enhance care delivery within their own teams.
The course will be delivered by Dr Paul Howard and Dr Claire Stark Toller, both recognised leaders in palliative medicine and contributors to the Palliative Care Formulary, bringing a wealth of clinical expertise and reaL-world experience to the day.
