South African IJPN awards finalist recognised for breast cancer research

Ms Naicker came second in the category: Service User/Carer/Volunteer of the Year Award, gaining recognition for her work in breast cancer research.

About the IJPN Awards

The prestigious International Journal of Palliative Nursing Awards 2015, in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support, celebrated achievement and excellence in the work of palliative care nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.  

The winners were revealed at the awards ceremony on Monday 14 September at the Honourable Artillery Company in London, UK.

Sanesha Naicker

Ms Naicker embarked on a research study as part of her master’s / doctorate project, which focused on young women with breast cancer. During the research, she encountered numerous stumbling blocks, such as walking the streets in remote villages alone, even facing death at one stage.

With dedication and hard work, her work has helped improve healthcare in her country. She hopes to one day build her own clinic for the underprivileged and improve health promotion and care, patient advocacy and health awareness in South African communities and beyond.

Breast cancer awareness month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide annual campaign involving thousands of organisations, to highlight the importance of breast awareness, education and research.

During her research study, Ms Naicker focused on a young women with breast cancer. Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that starts in the cells of the breast. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.

There have been various campaigns this month highlighting breast cancer and Sanesha’s hard work and achievement in winning second place at the IJPN awards brings further attention to this important cause.
